Trinidad and Tobago - Ideal Caribbean Location For Manufacturers

Trinidad and Tobago - Ideal Caribbean Location For Manufacturers

“Trinidad and Tobago is the best place in the Caribbean for a world class manufacturing operation.” This is the testimony of Canadian Terrance Ortt, Chief Executive Officer of Domus Windows & Doors Ltd., a multi-million dollar establishment which moved its high-tech operations from St. Kitts to Trinidad and Tobago in 2018.

At the top of their list of reasons for setting up in Trinidad was the low cost of electricity as compared to other Caribbean islands in addition to the availability of skills relevant to the company’s business. “Workers in T&T are the best we’ve found in the Caribbean” said Ortt at the official launch of the factory in Chaguanas, on Tuesday 19th February, 2019.

Domus designs, manufactures, sells and services a full range of uPVC windows, doors and other related products to customers in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and South American markets. Their products are highly sought after particularly in hurricane prone countries because of their superior performance and ability to resist winds up to 230mph. The office in Trinidad is set up to be their new base for exports to other islands and the Americas in the near future.

At the launch Christopher Lewis, President InvesTT, stated “We look forward to the synergies this state of the art, computer integrated manufacturing facility will generate: creating direct and indirect employment, being a reliable service provider to the construction industry, introducing new technology  into Trinidad & Tobago’s manufacturing sector and also strengthening the local Chaguanas economy.”

As the national investment promotion agency, InvesTT was instrumental to the success of the Domus project through collaboration with various local entities during the facilitation process, in particular: the Ministry of Trade & Industry, the Ministry of National Security – Work Permits Section, the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, the Office of the Commissioner of State Lands, Town & Country Planning Division, Environmental Management Agency, Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards and Customs & Excise Division.  The agency’s Investor Services team has had a positive relationship with Domus over the years and worked hand in hand with the company to navigate the regulatory environment and walk them through every aspect of the project so that their goal could be achieved.
